Accessibility

The Mobility Authority is committed to making this Web site accessible to the widest possible audience, including people using assistive technology.

Accessibility and Usability Features

As part of that commitment, we are continually working to make all our Web pages more accessible. The following are some of the accessibility and usability features we are implementing:
  • Links to navigation and main page content for easier non-visual browsing - more information on these links is available;
  • Text and Textual Equivalents;
  • Documents not tied to hardware;
  • Hypertext links that make sense when read out of context;
  • Consistent use of headings, lists and Web site structure, including CSS to control the Web site's style and, in some cases, to control layout;
  • Summarizing material or using the attribute for content that may be difficult to access;
  • Providing alternatives in cases where content produced by scripts, applets or plug-ins may not be accessible or supported;
  • Avoiding the use of frames; and,
  • Summarizing table content and creating tables that allow for line-by-line reading.
The Manor Expressway site is gradually incorporating links that allow non-visual browsers to skip to Local Navigation and Main Content on Manor Expressway Web pages. Links that skip to Local Navigation, if present, direct users to links that relate to information on that page. Not all Manor Expressway site Web pages contain Local Navigation. Links that skip to Main Content direct users to the main content of a Web page.

Testing for Accessibility

In an effort to make our site universally accessible, we are periodically testing our pages with screen readers and other Web accessible tools, as well as on various platforms and browsers. Our guidelines call for:
  • Following current Web standards for HTML 4.0, and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS1);
  • Avoiding excess images, image maps and use of animation material;
  • Validating pages with various tools, including the W3C's HTML Validation Service;
  • Testing on the Windows and MAC platforms and numerous browsers (Netscape 3, 4, and 6; IE 5 and 6, Opera and Home Page Reader); and,
  • Using various accessibility checklists and guidelines
